7 Ways to Make Claude Respond Faster

When Claude feels slow, the instinct is to blame Anthropic's servers. Usually that's not it. Most of the time the delay is coming from something you can change in a few seconds, and it comes down to two things: how much you're asking for, and how much the conversation is already carrying.

Fix one or both, and Claude gets noticeably quicker.

Here's how to make Claude respond faster, starting with the changes that take the least effort.

First, rule out the boring causes

Before you touch how you prompt, check the obvious stuff. Is there an active incident at status.anthropic.com? Is your connection stable, and is a VPN routing your traffic the long way round? Any of these can add a delay that has nothing to do with the model.

There's also a sneaky one: the browser tab itself. A chat you've kept open for days forces your browser to hold hundreds of rendered messages in memory at once, which makes everything feel sluggish. The mobile app loads only recent messages, which is why it often stays snappy while the desktop tab crawls.

If none of that is the culprit, the delay is in the prompt.

The biggest lever is output length

Claude writes its answer one piece at a time, so a 2,000-word reply simply takes longer to produce than a 200-word one. The single fastest change you can make is to ask for less.

Tell Claude how long you want the answer and what shape it should take:

"Answer in 100 words."

"Bullet points only, no preamble."

"Assume I already know the basics."

Constraints like these strip out the padding that eats time. You get the substance without waiting for three paragraphs of throat-clearing first.

Start a fresh chat more often

Here's the one that catches people out. Claude doesn't remember your conversation between turns the way a person does. It re-reads the entire chat every single time you send a message: your earlier prompts, its own replies, and any files you've uploaded.
