What this guide covers. This is a guide to chatting with Claude, the everyday experience of typing to Claude at claude.ai or in the app, and getting real work done. That's where every beginner starts, and it's where the vast majority of people spend all their time. Everything here is written for that: the chat window, prompting, files, the built-in features, and choosing a plan.

What it doesn't cover, on purpose. Claude is a bigger family of tools than just chat. There's Claude Code (for developers), Claude Cowork (for hands-off, multi-step tasks), Claude Design, and integrations for Excel, PowerPoint and email, plus a developer API. Those are powerful, but they are not where a beginner should start, handed to someone on day one, they overwhelm rather than help. So this guide deliberately leaves them out. When you've got comfortable with chat and you're ready for more, they each have their own dedicated beginner's guide in this series. Master the chat first; the rest builds on it.
