Ads arrived in ChatGPT in the UK on 2 June 2026. If you're on the free plan or the £8-ish Go plan, you've probably seen one by now, sitting under an answer with a small "Sponsored" tag. If you haven't noticed, that's rather the point.

Ads in AI assistants are different from ads on a web page, because the assistant is also the thing you're asking for advice. A chatbot that recommends a mattress, then shows a mattress ad, is a new problem, and the companies have taken very different positions on it.

This guide is the current list: who shows ads, who says they never will, who uses your chats to target ads elsewhere, and how to tell which you're looking at. All checked on 23 September 2026. It will date, so check the settings paths yourself.
