The most capable AI model you can use right now costs about $2.75 to complete a single benchmark task. The cheapest model on the same leaderboard does comparable work for two cents. That's a gap of more than 130x, and it's hiding in a metric most people have never heard of.

It's called cost per task, and it's quietly becoming the most honest way to compare AI models.

Why price per token lies to you

AI companies price their models per token, the small chunks of text a model reads and writes (a token is roughly three quarters of a word). One model might charge $10 per million input tokens, another $0.30. Simple comparison, you'd think.

Except it isn't. Modern AI models "reason" before they answer, writing out long internal chains of thought that you pay for even though you never read them. Two models with identical per-token prices can differ enormously in what a finished piece of work actually costs, because one burns ten times the tokens getting there.
